WorldWide Battery to create up to 50 jobs in Muncie
The Indianapolis company plans to buy the former Sovereign Tool building on Hoyt Avenue, on the edge of the Industria Centre industrial park.
An Indianapolis battery company will create as many as 50 jobs when it opens a new facility on Muncie's southwest side.
During a Tuesday morning meeting, Delaware County Council approved a one-year property tax abatement for WorldWide Battery, which plans to buy the former Sovereign Tool building on Hoyt Avenue, on the edge of the Industria Centre industrial park, and create as many as 50 jobs in a facility that will clean and recharge batteries.
Senior Vice President John Carter said the Indianapolis company, which sells 10,000 batteries a month, would start with about 20 jobs, with plans to build to a local workforce of 35-50.
Carter said his company does not open the batteries it handles, instead simply cleaning, testing and charging them.
In an interview, Carter said the company had been courted by Madison County economic development officials. The company had been located in Anderson before it moved to Indianapolis.
"Anderson really wanted us to come back," Carter said.
Why move to Muncie?
"We've just run out of room (at the Indianapolis facility)," Carter said.
He also credited Terry Murphy of the Muncie-Delaware County Economic Development Alliance with the decision to locate in Muncie, as well as the availability of the former Sovereign building, with drawing the company here.
"We're looking forward to being in Delaware County," Carter said.
He said the company could be in place by December.
Council approved a one-year abatement that Murphy said was worth $21,400 as incentive to land the company.
