Muncie Redevelopment Commission Submits Brownfield Planning Grant

The Muncie Redevelopment Commission has recently submitted a Grant Proposal to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for $175,000.00 for the implementation of an area-wide Brownfield’s Planning Pilot Program. The purpose of the grant is to address Brownfield sites along Muncie’s major rail corridors.

If awarded, this program will allow the City of Muncie to continue their efforts to provide the technical assistance needed to support Brownfield assessment, clean-up and revitalization efforts with a concentration of highly impacted Brownfield areas. Through area-wide planning, the City will address the needs of low-income and disadvantaged neighborhoods located within these areas. In addition, this project will include the preparation of a dynamic planning document that will provide a roadmap to sustain the community’s efforts in maintaining a volunteer partnership and addressing the complexities of identifying and prioritizing environmental health concerns and implementing public health threat reduction activities.

Brad Bookout, Assistant Director of Business Development with the Muncie-Delaware County Economic Development Alliance said “the removal of blight greatly increases the probability of job creation in a community that desperately needs improvement in quality of life and economic revitalization. Clean-up and subsequent redevelopment of Brownfields and adjacent areas along the railroad corridors will result in the use and reuse of existing infrastructure, including transportation, storm and sanitary sewers, as well as other underutilized assets.”

This grant application was a combined effort of the Mayor of Muncie, the Muncie Redevelopment Commission, Ball State University, The Cardinal Greenway and Symbiont Corporation.
