Groundbreaking Held for New 80,000 Square Foot Expandable Shell Building

Muncie, IN (July 30, 2007) - At a formal groundbreaking ceremony held on Tuesday afternoon, local government and economic development officials announced the construction of a new 80,000 square foot "spec building" in the Industria Centre Industrial Park. The new shell building will be the largest ever constructed in the community. The design will allow the structure expansion capabilities up to 240,000 square feet.

This new initiative is a partnership among the Delaware County Commissioners, Mayor of Muncie, Garmong Construction and Delaware Advancement Corporation (Vision 2011 Economic Development Alliance). The purpose of the program is to provide a site-ready building that can be easily finished out in 60 to 90 days thus saving a company valuable construction and permitting time. National business and site location consultants estimate that eighty percent (80%) of companies looking to expand into an area will first look at the inventory of available buildings a community has to offer. "A community with a flexible and available building will have a significant advantage over a city that does not, " said Terry Murphy, Vice President Economic Development for the Muncie-Delaware County Economic Development Alliance.

"The shell building we are constructing today is expandable and will enable us to compete for projects where companies are looking for between 75,000 square feet and 250,000 square feet," said Tom Bennington, Delaware County Commissioner. "Of course the larger the building, the greater the potential reward is with regard to new jobs and capital investment," added Bennington.

"The City of Muncie is proud to be part of this partnership and initiative", said Phyllis Amburn, Deputy Mayor of Muncie. "The shell building program has rewarded the community with six new and/or existing businesses, over $53 million in capital investment, and nearly 1,300 new jobs. Today's announcement is another positive step in helping to bring new jobs and investment to our community", added Amburn.

"Garmong Construction is happy to be part of this partnership as well," said Dan Zuerner, Director of Business Development for Garmong Construction Services. "the flexibility and expansion capabilities of this "shell structure" will allow the community to seek to attract businesses in the area of advanced manufacturing, distribution, agriculture, life science, and information technology," added Zuerner.

Construction on the building will begin in August. A January, 2008 completion date is expected.
